97 Points Wine Enthusiast Editor's Choice -
Extremely fresh and pungent aromas of smashed strawberries are enhanced by white pepper dust, whole green peppercorns, wet tobacco leaf and the smell of a dewy morning amidst pine trees and chaparral scrub on this wine by Chad Melville. The palate is simply stunning with juniper and pine-needle elements that slip into rich yet tart cherry and baked raspberry, proving extremely dynamic and lovely all around.
94 Points Vinous - The 2016 Pinot Noir Estate Block M is another impressive wine. Dense, powerful and also closed in itself, the Block M has the most overt density of any of the Melville 2016s. Readers will have to give the 2016 at least a few years to unwind. The 80% whole clusters are totally buried by the sheer intensity of the fruit. An underlying hard pan of clay constricts the vines, which along with the windswept hillside and tiny clusters yields a potent, naturally concentrated wine.
93 Points Wine & Spirits - Chad Melville makes this wine from a parcel in his family’s vineyards on the west side of Lompoc, on a small mesa where the soil is deep clay. He includes 70 percent whole clusters in the fermentation, lending the wine a lot of spice surrounding the ripe red cherry flavor. It’s salty and sweet, with a briny, nori-like note in the end, a substantial and mouthwatering pinot noir to serve with roast arctic char.
