| 1985 Scott's Selection Macallan Single Malt Scotch|
Amber gold in colour with a rich full-bodied nose tinged with a hint of peat, the flavour is very smooth, creamy and warm. The finish endorsed the excellence of this fine malt.
Robert Scott has been immersed in the Scotch Whisky trade since he left school at the age of 16. Starting first as a lowly distillery worker responsible for cleaning the stills, he rose steadily through the ranks, gaining extensive knowledge of the distilling trade. By the time he had reached his 32nd birthday not only had he gained an enviable reputation as an accomplished all-rounder in whisky production but, most importantly, he had become one of the most respected "nosers" of Scotch Whiskies. His keen sense of smell, combined with years of training, permitted him to appreciate the individual characteristics and idiosyncrasies of as many as 100 different malt whiskies. His training enabled him to detect any flaws in specific distillations, so that immediate remedial action could be taken.
As time passed, he became increasingly expert at selecting different malts to meet the demands of his exacting employer Mr George Christie, founder of the Speyside Distillery.
In the 1970s Robert Scott was appointed Master Distiller, a position he held in the finest traditions of this ancient craft until retirement beckoned. Prior to caring full time for his garden in Glasgow, Robert was, however, to be given one final assignment, namely to create a personal selection of his favourite single malt whiskies. Thus Scott's Selection was born.
Robert's criteria for choosing his Selection is rigorous:
Only top quality malts (and one top quality grain) are included, with an optimum level of ageing.
The greatest care is taken during bottling to ensure that the malts are maintained as closely as possible to their natural state in the cask. Thus whiskies are filtered but not chilled prior to bottling; nor are they diluted by the addition of water. Only by following the strictest quality controls can the individual characteristics of each malt be fully appreciated.
The consumer packaging should reflect the heritage and character of the whiskies and distinguish the three distinct distilling areas: Highland, Lowland and Islay.
Over the past few years a number of new additions have been added to the original portfolio while stocks of some others have, inevitably, been exhausted. The Selection now reads like an encyclopaedia of "great whiskies of Scotland". From the majestic Macallan to the suprising North of Scotland single grain whisky, the range is impressive. Scott's Selection is distributed in the major malt whisky markets of the world including the United States and Europe and it is hoped that it will soon be widely available in the resurgent Japanese Market.
Scott's Selection is a tribute to the great tradition of distilling whisky in Scotland and above all to the knowledge and expertise of Robert Scott, Master Distiller.
Single malt Scotch: a delight usually refrained from until after dinner. Most popular pairing: the cigar
Single malt whisky is a whisky which is distilled at a single distillery, and which is made completely from a single type of malted grain, traditionally barley, (although there are also single malt rye whiskies). Most single malt whiskies are distilled using a pot still. Single malts are produced all over the world, but the best known single malts come from Scotland, Ireland and Japan.
