Drink now. 560 cases made. by Wine Spectator A terrific rose, the dark ruby-colored 2005 Le Celeidh is a bold, exuberant, dry rose fashioned from 54% Syrah, 34% Mourvedre, and 12% Grenache. This ripe, big, dense offering can be drunk over the next 12 months with more flavorful foods than most roses can handle. by Robert Parker This wine has often been referred to as ‘rosé on steroids’. We call it “The Celeidh”. Celeidh (pronounced 'KAY-lee') is a Gaelic word that means ‘dance’ or ‘party’ or ‘celebration’. We make this wine in celebration of the birth of our first son, Jack Francis Garretson.
When we first started producing rosé for our winery, we followed a protocol more Provençal than New World. That is to say minimal skin contact (resulting in a lighter, pink color), higher acidity and a bit earthy. Sadly, most consumers would take one look at it and think that it was white zinfandel! As a result, the wine languished on the shelves. While we love the pink wines of Southern France, we quickly determined it was necessary to follow a different tack.
Today our Celeidh follows a much different protocol. It is always a blend dominated (usually 45-60%) by Syrah. To this we blend (up to a third) Mourvèdre and some Grenache. All three varieties are free-run juice that is bled off three to four days after destemming. The result is a much darker wine that exhibits more aromas, flavors and texture than is typical for a rosé. Bright cherry (the Syrah), strawberry and raspberry (the Grenache) flavors interplay with notes of sandalwood and game meats (the Mourvèdre). The resulting wine is basically a chillable light red, with a lot of fruit, good acidity but (due to the fact it’s not pressed) no harsh tannins.
Sadly, most rosé wines are derived not from a desire to make a compelling rosé, but are - rather - the result of trying to produce a better red wine. By removing some of the free-run juice from the fermenter early on, the remaining fruit can produce a darker, more-intense red wine. While some winemakers simply pour the free-run away, some prefer to make a little wine (read: a little money) from it, hence a lot of innocuous pink wine is out there. We make rosé to make rosé. With three to four days on the skin, what's left over in the fermenter wouldn't make a good red. So, we're making rosé at the cost of red wine, which is fine by us. It's not always about money.
The Celeidh truly is a red wine drinker’s rosé. It has also proven to be an extremely versatile wine, with the ability to marry well with a wide range of foods, from grilled veggies, fish and fowl to more substantial meats. And as it’s nearly a red wine, our Celeidh will improve with a few years in bottle. From the Winemaker
